For the past ten years, Western Red Cedar deck boards have been our best-selling decking product; favoured by architects, contractors and homeowners alike due to its stunning appearance and outstanding performance characteristics.

We have established a reputation as one of the leading suppliers of Western Red Cedar decking to the UK trade, with large stocks, ready for immediate delivery. Our team works closely with the Canadian suppliers to ensure that the products we offer are the very best available, exceeding grading rules and satisfying the needs of leading architects and designers.

We offer two grades of Western Red Cedar contemporary decking, Cascadia and Cedardeck Select. Cedardeck Select far exceeds ‘Architect Knotty’ grading standards, whilst Cascadia consistently offers the highest grade Select Tight Knot available.

Western Red Cedar can create a high-quality deck, with a natural ability to resist decay and dimensional properties, keeping the decking straight and stable, perfect for home decking or commercial decking use.

Composite decking from the Glacier range is a real eye-catcher. The extra-wide boards have a smart contemporary look and feel great underfoot too.

Made from GCC-German Compact Composite, EasyDeck® is a PVC-free wood material manufactured in Germany. Glacier deck boards are reversible. One face is finely corrugated, and the other face is randomly structured to give it a wood character.

We offer a range of high quality treated carcassing material for use as deck joists, and other exterior structural applications.

Available from stock in two sizes, Premium Deck Joists are produced from high-quality kiln-dried softwood.

To make them suitable for exterior (in-ground) use, Premium Deck Joists are high pressure preservative treated to Use Class 4 application in line with BS8417.  The high-pressure process ensures that the preservative treatment penetrates the wood deeply, to provide long-lasting protection.

For wood in permanent ground or fresh water contact, or providing exterior structural support, Use Class 4 levels of protection MUST be achieved. Anything less and service life, structural safety and customer satisfaction will be compromised.

With its stunning natural appearance and exceptional performance characteristics, Select Knotty Western Red Cedar decking is the perfect material for creating impressive outdoor living spaces.

Western Red Cedar is renowned for its durability, dimensional stability, and natural beauty. It is also relatively free of splinters and is a forgiving surface, making it safe for children to play on. It's also worth noting that Western Red Cedar decking is entirely natural and contains no toxic preservative chemicals.

On top of an already impressive list of natural attributes, Select Knotty decking also emits an evocative aroma. It exudes a feeling of warmth and luxury that sets it apart from other decking materials.

Select Knotty decking is sustainably sourced from well-managed forests and supplied with full PEFC chain of custody certification.

Colour: Palette of rich, warm wood tones, which vary from light amber to dark reddish-brown.

Durability: When properly finished and maintained, Western Red Cedar will deliver decades of trouble-free service. It has a decay resistance of durability class 2 (durable) according to the EN 113 standard.

Stability: Western Red Cedar has excellent dimensional stability because of its low wood density and shrinkage factor. Shrinkage and swelling are minimal, displaying only small movements with changes in humidity.

Density: The wood of Western Red Cedar is light, weighing 330-390 kg/m³.

Kiln-dried: Our Western Red Cedar is kiln-dried, giving it many advantages. The process improves dimensional stability, permits the immediate application of a coating, and enables installation with minimal site acclimatisation.

Grading: This Western Red Cedar decking is produced exclusively from 'Select Knotty' grade Western Red Cedar. The grade is characterised by well-interspersed sound tight (live) knots. Read more about grading and quality here.

Sourcing/certification: Western Red Cedar is sourced from the most sustainably managed forests in the world in British Columbia, Canada, and comes with full PEFC certification.

Decking FAQs

At B and F Specialist Timber, we sell a wide variety of timber decking for both residential and commercial applications.

This includes:

  • Thermowood pine decking: Chemical-free, thermowood offers better natural resistance to harsh weather conditions. Therefore, you won’t have to deal with rot, shrinkage, or fungal growth.
  • Sawn green treated timber: Cost-effective and pressure-treated with preservatives, this timber is great for structural applications, supporting frames, or informal decking spaces. Plus, it's also resistant to rot and insects.
  • Yellow balau decking: Beautiful and warm, this tropical hardwood decking is known for its heavy-duty strength and long life. It's great for high-traffic areas and has a naturally oily texture that helps repel moisture.
  • Eased-edge kiln-dried treated timber: These softwoods have been kiln-dried to improve consistency and reduce movement for a more comfortable underfoot feel and smooth finish. They're also treated to UC3 or UC4 standards for durability against ground contact or surface exposure.

Yes! All of our timber is harvested from sustainable rainforests in Europe using eco-friendly methods to reduce CO₂ emissions and lower our carbon footprint.

We’re on a mission to provide sustainable construction materials for builders and DIYers in the UK, offering options like Thermowood, which is produced using only heat and steam, without the use of chemicals.

All of our timber products come from FSC® or PEFC-certified forests, meaning they meet globally recognised standards for responsible forestry. When you choose B and F, you’re helping to protect forest regeneration and biodiversity.

The best timber decking for your project depends on how often the deck will be used, its intended purpose, and where it’s being installed.

To help you make a decision, we’ve included a quick little buying guide:

  • For exposed areas (rooftops, gardens, seafronts) – opt for thermood, as this offers good resistance to rot and fading and is lightweight and easy to handle.
  • For natural charm and durability – Yellow balau is ideal for larger family decks or restaurants, as it has a lovely warm colour, moisture-resistant surface, and structural strength.
  • For budget installations – Eased-edge kiln-dried timber offers excellent stability while being cost-effective. It’s easy to stain and treat, and its comfy underfoot feel makes it ideal for gardens, walkways, or raised seating areas.
  • For commercial projects – Sawn green treated timber are functional and hard-wearing, ideal for projects where strength is favoured over appearance. This makes them perfect for structural bases.

While we don’t offer any specific guarantees for our timber decking boards, the quality and durability of our products offer peace of mind, providing long-term performance.

Specifically, our thermowood and yellow balau decking is favoured for its natural resistance to rot, shrinkage, and weathering. With plenty of natural and treated timber decking to choose from, you’ll find something that can live up to any task.

To keep your timber decking boards functioning as they should for years to come, a little work on your end is required after the initial installation.

While some products, like Thermowood or Yellow Balau, are more resilient by design, no deck is unfortunately completely maintenance-free. So, here’s what you need to do to keep it in tip-top shape:

  • Weekly cleaning: Sweep away any dirt, twigs, and debris from your decking and address any stains or marks as soon as possible.
  • Thorough clean every 6 months: Clean your deck deeply every 6 months with a pressure washer on a low setting, scrubbing hidden areas, and addressing any mould, algae, or fungal growth.
  • Annual inspection: Inspect your boards every year (we suggest spring) for loose fixings, lifted boards, and signs of wear. Treat any exposed timber or splits with a suitable wood preservative and check structural joists.
  • Reapply treatment: If necessary, go over your decking boards with a new treatment or oil, stain, or preservative once the old layer has worn down. This will keep the decking protected from UV rays, moisture, and discolouration.
  • Protect against furniture: If you’re placing heavy furniture on your decking, use rubber feet or protective pads for chairs and tables to prevent wear marks and scratches. Avoid dragging any furniture or ornaments across the deck!

At B and F, we’ve been within the timber industry since 1820, so you can trust us when we say we know what we’re talking about.

We offer high-grade, sustainable timber for residential and commercial projects, known for their exceptional performance and durability. With both treated and untreated boards, you’ll find whatever you need at a competitive price.

Plus, our delivery is quick and efficient, so that you can get started on your project in no time. We also have over 10 branches in the UK where you can visit to inspect our products before buying and ask our team any questions.

Unlike many high street or DIY-focused retailers, we also offer machining to order, bespoke sizing, and a timber coating service for when you require more from your timber.

Yes! Our timber decking is easy to install once you get the hang of it.

That said, there are a few things to consider before tackling the job yourself:

  • You’ll need a solid, level sub-frame built with treated timber to support the boards.
  • Leave appropriate spacing between boards to allow for natural expansion and drainage.
  • Pre-drilling screw holes is recommended for hardwoods like Fraké to avoid splitting.
  • When cutting ends on site, reseal them using a suitable end-grain preservative for best results.

If you’re not an experienced DIYer and you don’t feel up to the task, contact a professional to install your decking for you.
