Are you looking for the next innovative material for your project? If so, let us introduce our sleek and durable thermowood planks.

Thermowood is heated to 200 degrees centigrade and is designed using a chemical-free process, making it the future of eco-friendly installations. This can be used for home upgrades and landscaping, offering unmatched durability and exceptional beauty.

Its unique treatment process makes it extra resistant to fire, as it reduces moisture content and natural resins in the wood. When used for garden decking or building cladding, thermowood resists harsh UV rays, preventing fading. It also provides a uniform and eye-catching look.

We provide everything from corner trims for cladding and fascia inside the home to tongue and groove boards for quick and seamless installations. Our rainscreen thermowood offers additional resistance to harsh weather conditions and creates a polished and modern look for any project.

ThermoWood® Pine is an attractive, sustainable solid wood decking material produced using a chemical-free natural process involving heat and steam. Finnish-grown European Redwood (Scandinavian Pine) is heat-treated to temperatures in excess of 200 degrees Centigrade. This thermal modification process makes it durable, dimensionally stable, resin-free, and even changes its colour to a pleasing warm brown. The improved properties of the ThermoWood Pine make it an ideal material for use in exposed external areas such as decking.

Our ThermoWood Pine decking is smooth all round and has grooves on the sides to accept a clip system (also available). The side grooves make it possible to install with no fixings visible on the surface of the deck. It can also be installed in the conventional method using deck screws fixed through the face of board.

Our ThermoWood Pine decking has a stylish appearance and feels pleasant underfoot, even in hot conditions. No chemicals are used in the production process, so it is entirely free of toxins, making it a safe play surface for children.

Raw material: Silva ThermoWood Pine is produced from high-quality PEFC certified Nordic Pine (Pinus Sylvestris). It is grown in the central belt of Finland, one of the best areas in the world for tree growth. Sub-zero winters alternate with short warm summers, which results in slow growth.

The slow growth provides the best possible straight-grained timber: branches and therefore knots are few, and those that exist are small. Growth is symmetrical, and trunks are straight and round. Growth rings are thin and tightly-packed. The amount of juvenile wood is little and heartwood high. The result is a hard, robust, and straight-grained timber with low internal tension and minimal cracks. The low-resinous, evenly patterned Finnish wood is first-class material for ThermoWood Pine production.

Grading: To ensure Silva ThermoWood Pine decking meets the highest quality standards, only specially selected sound (live) knotted wood is used in the production process. The quality of sawn timber is controlled with a general grading system according to the number, quality, location, and size of the knots and other features. The quality grade used to produce Silva ThermoWood Pine is A/B. Read more about grading and quality here.

Sourcing/certification: The raw material is sourced from well-managed and sustainable forests fully certified under the Pan European Forestry Certification (PEFC) scheme.

Thermowood FAQs

Thermowood is a type of softwood that has been thermally modified by heating it at 200 degrees centigrade, making it fire-resistant, tougher, and longer-lasting.

The heat and steam drive moisture and natural resins out of the timber, making it better equipped to handle harsh conditions and outdoor installations. During this process, the structure of the wood changes, resulting in a warm brown colour throughout.

Not only does this make it look more appealing for decorative use, but it also improves its resistance to rot and decay and reduces the risk of swelling and shrinking.

Thermowood cladding is designed mostly for external use, making it popular for garden fences and installing on exterior walls of homes or commercial properties.

Many customers love it for its modern, beautiful appearance, which elevates any building and improves insulation. It’s mostly designed to protect the underlying structure from damage.

Since it’s been heat-treated, the cladding is more resistant to fungi and rot, more dimensionally stable and less prone to cupping, twisting, and movement than standard softwood.

We sell thermowood cladding in boards, tongue-and-groove (TGV), channel and rainscreen profiles, plus matching corner pieces and trims. These are available in warm brown tones, which can be left to weather to a silvery grey over time or finished in a stain or coating for a longer-lasting finish.

Similar to thermowood cladding, our decking is designed for external use and is commonly used for garden or patio decks.

Thermowood decking is made from thermally modified pine. You’ll also find it used on terraces and balconies. At B&F Specialist Timber, our decking is made from Finnish-grown European redwood (Scandinavian pine) that’s heat-treated to over 200°C.

These boards are stable, resin-free, durable, and have a consistent warm brown colour, perfect for those who want to create a cosy and beautiful decking area. It has a soft underfoot feel and can handle harsh UV rays and heavy rain.

Since it’s thermally modified, thermowood doesn’t rely on traditional preservative treatment the same way a softwood does.

It has a durability class 2 rating in accordance with BS1186-3, meaning it isn’t necessary to add further treatment. However, if you want to keep the brown colour for longer and reduce weathering, you may want to add a protective coating.

We offer a Timber Coating Service and HR Prof fire-retardant treatment, which can be added onto your purchase.

Our thermowood is high-quality Nordic/Scandinavian pine sourced from sustainably managed forests.

It’s an eco-friendly product that is FSC/PEFC certified, making it a reliable, trustworthy choice for big projects and small home builds. The trees our thermowood is harvested from have tight growth rings, small knots, and straight, even grain, creating low-tension boards.

Yes! Thermowood can be stained, painted, or oiled to retain its natural colour or change it up for a personalised finish.

Since thermowood is a naturally brown colour, any stain or coating you apply will sit on top of that base colour, usually giving a richer, deeper tone rather than the look you’d get on pale, untreated pine.

It’s not absolutely necessary to add a finish to thermowood, since it’s already undergone a process that makes it highly resistant to rot, decay, and weathering.

However, we advise adding a finishing coat if you want to keep that rich brown colour for longer by slowing down UV damage and greying. A high-quality topcoat can also improve water resistance and surface cracking.

Our thermowood has a durability class 2 decay resistance according to BS1186-3 standards.

The heat-and-steam process reduces the timber’s ability to absorb moisture and removes much of the resin and sugars that fungi feed on. Therefore, it’s great for decking and external walls; you’ll notice less cupping, twisting, and movement during changes in weather.

Thermowood is designed to last 25 to 30 years when properly cared for and installed.

However, there is no set time limit, as it all comes down to the quality of the thermowood, how it’s used, and how well it is maintained.
